I had originally conceived of this project as a time to truly ‘wander in music’, but it is becoming very apparent that I am going to need to map out what I am doing in some way so that there is some semblance of reason behind it. I realize that it was pretty naive to expect that I could say, “I’m going to start with ancient music and end up in modern music of the 21st century.

So, for now, here’s a brainstorm of the first few stages:

1. Ancient music. This will be anything that originates before the common era, regardless of location. While this will be somewhat scatter-shot, I feel this era is so limited that a real deep dive into one region would be an exercise in frustration.
2. Early western music. In this instance, I mean music from the western hemisphere, not country music, although that will come down along eventually. It will focus mostly on European music from the 1st thousand years of the common era.
